The Junior Handlers of Kern County (JHKC) is for boys and girls 7-18 years old, have a pure bred dog* that is or would like to be involved in American Kennel Club (AKC) Dog Shows as a Junior Handler.

Unlike the regular breed classes, in Junior Showmanship the handler is judged on their abilities to handle their breed of dog not the dog's conformation, follow ring procedures, and how well they (handler and dog) work as a team.

Why show in Junior Showmanship? Boys and girls that show in Junior Showmanship gain knowledge that only being in the junior ring can provide, it teaches confidence in their handling abilities. The more the Junior Handler is in the junior ring the more confident they become in their own ability and ring procedures, which in turns reflects the way they present their dog not only in the junior ring but also in the breed ring. It also teaches sportsmanship, to be humble when you win and to be graces when you lose in the ring and in life.

The JHKC hold junior handling classes for beginners to advanced, have Bi-monthly meetings that include learning about their breed of dog, structure, teach proper grooming for their breed including ears and teeth, introduce them to obedience, rally, and agility. Mainly, the JHKC is a club for Junior Handlers that want to excel in the sport of Dog Shows.

To become a member of the Junior Handlers of Kern County you MUST attend three (3) meetings within one (1) years time, have an AKC registered dog*, showing or want to show at AKC events, and pay dues when you turn in your application.

* If you do not have an AKC registered pure bred dog when you apply for membership you have up to one (1) year from the date of membership to acquire a AKC registered pure bred dog.
